Through all of this I have felt like Mr. Kris is very lukewarm on going. I asked him point blank a week or so ago if he even wanted to go and he said yes but still seemed hesitant to me. I said that Jack and I could just go by ourselves and he said no, no, he wanted to go.
Well on Friday he was working from home and I was off so we took the rare opportunity to have lunch out together. While we were eating (sushi, and I swear I haven't had sushi in MONTHS), I looked him in the eyes again and asked, "Do you really want to go?"
At first he said he just wasn't sure we should be spending the money, since we've been saving up for a house. But we have a decent sized down payment saved up and both recently got raises. Next year I'll have 25 years here and will receive another fairly substantial raise because of that. We're not hurting for money, though we both do have aging cars so I thought maybe that was part of it. And his aunt had let us know the other day that her car was toast - apparently the front wheel FELL OFF right after coming out of the tunnel after she'd been down to see Jack in mid July. She mentioned something about a lawyer and her mechanic and insurance so I'm guessing she got a decent payout; Mr. Kris and I had discussed together about helping her out if she needed it, especially because she's always been there for us and has been a godsend whenever we need someone to watch Jack. I know we're blessed, but other than daycare and after school we've never had to hire a babysitter.
So anyway back to lunch. I asked him again point blank and he said he just has a 'bad feeling' about it. He said it wasn't because of money, just that he just had a bad feeling and didn't think we should go.
How do I argue against that????
So now I guess we're not going, though I'm still looking stuff up (and found a great deal on a 2br hotel near the Tower of London). I even figured out that with the airfare jumping in price for the Saturday after Thanksgiving, that it would actually be cheaper for us to go for 9 days instead of 8.
I'm just kind of bummed, for a few reasons. One, we didn't do any big trip for my 50th birthday last year. There were a lot of reasons why not, mainly because we just couldn't make the airfare and time off work out. My birthday was the week after Thanksgiving then, and we'd have had to have someone come watch Jack (we weren't planning on taking him to that trip, were looking at London, the Caribbean, Iceland, etc.). We ended up going to Ocean City for Thanksgiving and on my birthday had dinner out at a nice place and my friend took me to a spa the next day. It's not that it wasn't nice, but it wasn't really what I wanted to do. This year my birthday is on Thanksgiving so it's easier to plan travel, since Jack is off the entire week from school. And I'm also reminded of my 40th birthday, which was also on Thanksgiving. On my 39th birthday I told Mr. Kris I wanted to go to NYC and see the Macy's parade in person on my birthday. He said he would plan it and didn't do squat, and in like August or September I mentioned it to him and he said "well it was really expensive." Yeah that's why I told you a YEAR in advance. And his mom was there when I told him, and she said "we'll make it happen" and I know that was her telling him she'd help him with planning and possibly financially and he didn't pick up on that at all. So we ended up staying in town (I even researched some places to go but it was a little too last minute). We went to a friend's house in Northern Virginia and spent the evening playing Cards Against Humanity (literally until like 2am lol) and watching the Ravens win. Was it a bad night? No. Was it what I wanted to do to celebrate a milestone birthday? Again, no.
sigh
