News for the week of 29-Feb-2016
by Carol Banks Weber
Laura Wright (Carly) took over the GH Instagram last Friday, whatever that means. She posted selfies? Anyway, scroll down more. Some of the photos are very artistic, capturing the vibe on and off the set with the cast. I especially enjoyed the one of Hayley Erin (Kiki) and Robert Palmer Watkins (Dillon) poring over the script in hair and make-up, as well as Watkins again, with a smile on his face, totally unaware of the camera while in wardrobe.
Maurice Benard (Sonny) gave Dr. Oz an exclusive look at what it’s like to live with his bipolar disorder (“It’s the devil and God”) and fear of flying in last Thursday’s show — no holds barred. Benard talked openly about his three nervous breakdowns, thoughts of suicide, threats to wife Paula, and blurring the lines between reality and soap fiction early on, three weeks into landing the GH role (during the Karen, the stripper, story) when he still hadn’t had it under control.
Benard revealed aspects of his disorder he said he’d never talked about in public before.
He also filmed himself boarding a plane to Dr. Oz’s studio, filled with anxiety that came and eventually left. “Your mind keeps saying, ‘Get off the plane.’” He got up, went to the bathroom, and “it went away. You gotta keep telling yourself, ‘It will pass.’”
Benard’s co-star Bryan Craig (Morgan) recorded a special message, which honored the veteran, Emmy-winning actor. Craig credited Benard with helping him portray a bipolar young man in the early stages of diagnosis. “I couldn’t have done it without you. Your strength and honesty is inspiring. I think you are an amazing role model for anyone who is going through this in real life.” Craig’s message moved Benard to tears.
Benard admitted to keeping his bipolar disorder secret initially, because he wouldn’t get hired for acting roles — until he found out that talking about it saved a life. He then said that it’s better to come out with his disorder and help people than get acting jobs.
He talked about his parents committing him, finding a long latch in his room, and getting close to fashioning it into a sharp blade to kill himself with. But asked God to help him, and instead turned the latch into a cross.
Benard’s wife talked to Dr. Oz too. Both their daughters were in attendance.
Check out the video of the appearance on Michael Fairman’s site.
Brooklyn Rae Silzer (Emma) returns for spring break to love on grandma Anna, later on in March.
Michael Easton (?) returned to the set the other week already to start filming. His scenes as a new character begin on March 18.

Helena Cassadine’s lawyer summons everyone named in her will. When they arrive, they find themselves watching Helena herself deliver the verdict dispensing the estate. A mysterious character is also going to be among them. This video effectively makes the will in Nikolas’s safe worthless. Is the mystery guest who comes forward the eldest Cassadine survivor named Valentin, aka Michael Easton’s new character? And will Valentin inherit the bulk of Helena’s estate? Helena will send Laura on a scavenger hunt for… ?
