I'm so freaking mad about it too, mainly because I was dumb and didn't think about putting some of it in the extra freezer before the power went out.

Anyway.

Yesterday I got home from picking up Jack and BGE (our electric company) was in front of our neighbor's house. About 15 minutes later I get an automated call from BGE saying that our power is going to be turned off at 5pm and will be out for 10 hours. It went out around 5:10 for maybe a minute then came back on. About 45 minutes later we saw the BGE truck up on the next street talking to a neighbor, so Mr. Kris went to get the deets. Turns out two of the houses in our court were out of power and the transformer needed to be replaced. So he was turning it off for a contracted company to come in and fix it. Power went back out at 6:10.

We decided to go out for dinner so we wouldn't have to open the fridge. And here's where I was SO dumb and I'm so mad - I had things like bacon, bologna, hot dogs, egg bites - all brand new and unopened. I could have easily tossed them in the freezer in the garage, but I thought that less than 10 hours would be fine if we didn't open the door. I actually think it WOULD have been fine, but while we were coming home from dinner (we went to trivia and won $25!) it started to rain cats and dogs, lightning, thunder, etc.

So we get home and no trucks working on anything. And this is where I get annoyed - this storm was predicted. They KNEW it was coming. Why did they not leave our power on until they actually came out to work on the transformer??? Nope, it was out for almost 10 hours before they even got on scene!!! We heard them come up around 4am. Power came back on at 9:15. And I threw away probably $150 worth of food, would have probably been $50 worth if I'd used my brain yesterday. I checked many items and most were almost 50 degrees - the only things I kept were butter, unopened juice, fresh fruit and veggies, and some breakfast sandwiches I had made YESTERDAY that were in the bottom drawer of the fridge and were still 39 degrees.

I also kept some goat cheese I bought in Hawaii. It was packed in olive oil and the guy told me it was safe out of the fridge for up to two weeks unopened. So it's been opened but the olive oil was still solidified in the fridge so I figured it was still fine, since when I'd eaten any of it I had to wait for the olive oil to liquify before eating it.

Of COURSE I had done all my big grocery shopping on Tuesday and yesterday. Of COURSE.
