one year anniversary of us losing Leo. I was pretty OK the first half of the day, but while at work, I kept being reminded of the date--February 12--which would get me to thinking about Leo. For some reason, I tend to focus more on his ending than the almost 2 good years he had with us. I sobbed the entire drive home.

They give us so much and it's so hard to let them go when we have to.

That is so true.

We currently travel with our Mr. Gold (95 lb. Pitty/Cane Corso mix that we've had since he was an itty bitty 3 month old baby...now 10 years old) and our two almost 16 year old kitties, Shia and Frankie. We started bringing the kitties down with us to FL because they are getting old and need a lot more attention. And honestly they love the Florida life, lol. Especially living in a rancher instead of an old fashioned two story, plus basement house in PA. The girl Shia is arthritic and has problems with the stairs. And they both love lounging by the pool in the sun. I'll send you pics on Instagram!

Please do! I love the idea of kitties lounging by the pool! And Mr. Gold sounds adorable also. Yes, large dogs can be "adorable" <g>.

But we are also at the point in our lives that as much as we love them.......when they're gone we are not getting any more pets. We're getting old and the end of a pet's life is a lot of work both physically and very much emotionally. I don't think I can go through it again.

I get that. I really thought that I'd mourn Leo for a few months and then jump right back into having a cat. I wouldn't even need to do much searching for a kitty in need of a good home; the couple that found Leo on their porch all those years ago (he'd been starving and had badly cut his mouth on a can from which he was trying to extract some food and had essentially crawled up onto their porch to die, not knowing that he'd found a couple who would expend every ounce of energy, and every dollar they had, to save an animal) always have strays hanging around that they're trying to re-home. Plus my nephew has a friend who's constantly sending him pictures of cats in need. But so far, I just...can't.

I'm constantly reading (success!) stories of cats who are either out in the elements alone or are surrendered to shelters because their people have either died or are unable to care for them, and it breaks my heart every time. Leo was almost one of those cats...he was my bff's mom's cat after he was rescued and nursed back to health, and despite bff having 10,000 relatives, nobody was stepping up to take Leo after bff's mom had to move to a nursing home (bff TOTALLY would've taken Leo but her cat Grigio rules her household and doesn't tolerate other cats, though he's OK with dogs). I almost said no when she asked me to take him but I couldn't bear the thought of a 14 year old cat with kidney issues going to a shelter. It was the best decision of my life but I don't know if I could make such a decision again.

We have retired college friends down here who volunteer at an animal shelter every week. I don't know how they do it.....I'd want to take them all home with me! I mean I'd love to get my love and cuddles out, but I know that if it came down to it, my husband and I would end up rescuing too many and end up right were we are now, lol.

Hee! I've toyed on and off with fostering cats but I know I'd wind up with a house full of "foster fails".
