If you think you may extend your time with your mom, then drive down as it gives you more flexibility to stay longer.

As for timing, you'll still be gone but instead of sitting at airport waiting for your plane or potential flight delays, you'll be having some quiet alone time to think of how you can help, and then on the return trip, time to decompress from the visit.
