years since I've flown but I've found that if it's just me going, the cost of flying and renting a car was relatively close to the cost of driving, so I'd just save myself the time and fly (plus I like to fly, though I've liked it less since 9/11 due to getting through security, rules about liquids on the plane, not allowing loved ones to go back to the gate with you, etc.). If you flew, would you need to rent a car or would you have a vehicle to use while at your destination?
If it was me, I think I'd drive, mainly because you could bring more stuff with you and your schedule would be more flexible. Plus I hate having to figure out rental cars <g>. But I totally understand not enjoying a long car ride.
