I’ve been going out to see movies in a theater a lot in the last few weeks. As previously mentioned in the June movie post, I saw THE BIKERIDERS and MAXXINE (A24) . I enjoyed both.

Last week, I saw KINDS OF KINDNESS, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, who directed Poor Things, my favorite film in 2023. Kinds of Kindness is hard to explain. It’s a trio of stories with multiple roles played by Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau and others. Here’s a blurb: The three stories revolve around a man who tries to take control of his own life, a policeman whose wife seems like a different person, and a woman who searches for someone with a special ability. It’s kind of bizarre but interesting. I liked it but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

Tonight I saw JANET PLANET, an A24 story about a mother and daughter. It’s playwright Annie Baker’s first film. Julianne Nicholson is great the mom, Janet, and young Zoe Ziegler holds her own as 11-yr old Lacy. I loved it. Here’s a blurb: In 1991, an acupuncturist hippie named Janet spends the summer at home in rural western Massachusetts with her 11-year-old daughter, Lacy. Janet invites three people into her life: her boyfriend Wayne, her friend Regina, and local theatre group leader Avi. Lacy becomes skeptical of the three and remains attached to Janet, who grows frustrated with her daughter's clinginess.

I’m really enjoying getting out to the movie theater more. I’m lucky to have two great independent movie theaters nearby in Brooklyn. It’s good to be back to going out to the movies once a week again. I watch plenty of movies at home, but it is not the same as seeing movies in a theater. I hope movie theaters don’t completely disappear in my lifetime.

Next up, I’ll probably go more main stream and see TWISTERS.
