One woman with whom I worked directly never specifically told me her age but based on other stories she told me, I would guess she was at least in her mid 70s when she unfortunately lost her job with us due to downsizing. One of the jobs she did every day was unpacking the boxes of magazines sent to us to bind into a single volume...that job involved a LOT of bending and lifting. I think some people would be surprised to know how heavy some magazines could be when grouped with other issues. There was one--Artforum--that was printed on heavy, glossy 8"x 8" paper...man, put 3-4 of those issues together and then dead-lift them out of a box on the floor and you would FEEL it. I still don't know how this woman did that job every day but I always felt horrible that she HAD to do it...again, she didn't come right out and say oh, I'm so poor I still have to work but she said a lot of other things that let me know she wasn't at the bindery just to kill some time.
