to Nashville for a while now. El Chico loves Gosford Park. I don't know how I haven't seen hardly any of Altman's work.

Natural Born Killers (A): Hadn't seen it before but saw and loved True Romance last summer and it was originally from the same script. Brutal commentary about violence and the media and unfortunately has only gotten worse since the 1990s. (Was on Max but removed)

I saw this one a long time ago and I remember really liking it. Not everyone agreed.

I get why not everyone loves this film and why it was so controversial. I enjoyed it though. I really am curious to Tarantino's original script that True Romance was a part of. (I recommend True Romance if you haven't seen it.)

David Lynch: The Art Life (A-): A slow documentary about Lynch that had so many Lynchian moments.I still miss his daily weather reports. It was a great way to celebrate his birthday Jan. 20. (Max)

I’ve never seen this documentary. It’s going on my list. You may remember that I love David Lynch films. I think I’ve seen every one except Dune; and, of course, Twin Peaks.

I finally watched Dune on New Year's Eve. I kept putting it off as I knew it wouldn't be my cup of tea. There's some great cinematic moments that only Lynch could give, but it isn't my fave. Lynch is my fave American director and Twin Peaks is my fave show ever (in fact, today is Twin Peaks Day! The day Special Agent Cooper arrived in Twin Peaks to investigate the murder of Laura Palmer. (Not the anniversary of the show's first airing which is in April.)

Down Low (B+) Lukas Gage (White Lotus S1, Fargo S5, other things) wrote and co-starred in this movie with Zachary Quinto. Quinto is a man with a terminal illness, who hires male escort Gage. It's a dark comedy that is also poignant. And Judith Light is a supporting role as the nosy neighbour. (Library DVD)

This sounds interesting.

It's another that not everyone will love as it does go very dark places in the name of comedy. I do recommend it, but it may not be the best movie after a personal loss. Then again, it could be cathartic too. Just wanted to give a head's up.

I’m a big fan of A24. I’ll check out almost any film they are involved with.

HBO or Max or someone at Discovery has a new deal with A24 so a lot of their films will be on Max, which we get free with El Chico's mobile plan.

Fun. Truffaut makes me think of the pre-streaming, pre-DVD, pre-video (!) days when indie art houses ran double features (!) of Truffaut, Fellini, Bergman, etc films. It was a different time. Now we’ll probably see the demise of all, or most, movie theaters in the near future.

I saw my first Truffaut (Shoot the Piano Player) in my first film class in 2003 (400 Blows was in the next film class in 2004), and I've been wanting to watch the entire Antoine series ever since. I'm finally getting around to it! The one 2023 New Year's Goal I made good on was to watch a classic foreign film director (based on what's streaming)...I did Antonioni, Bergman, Fellini, Fassbinder (he made so many great films and is never talked about), Godard and now Truffaut. (Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I prefer Truffaut to Godard, but Spaniard Buñuel will always be my fave of the classic directors. I love Godard, but there's just something about Truffaut...)

It would have been so cool to have seen these at the cinema. I remember seeing La mala educación at the Kentucky Theatre in Lexington 2005 and driving to Cincinnati (hour and a half) to see Volver at a independent cinema there in 2006.

I've been curious to just how popular these directors actually were in the 1950s and 60s in the US. I mean, were they household names? Or just for the serious film lovers?
