Saltburn (A): Brilliant satire of the British Upper Class. (Amazon Prime)

It’s on my list.

The Holdovers (A) (already commented on it) (DVD)

Same.

Natural Born Killers (A): Hadn't seen it before but saw and loved True Romance last summer and it was originally from the same script. Brutal commentary about violence and the media and unfortunately has only gotten worse since the 1990s. (Was on Max but removed)

I saw this one a long time ago and I remember really liking it. Not everyone agreed.

David Lynch: The Art Life (A-): A slow documentary about Lynch that had so many Lynchian moments.I still miss his daily weather reports. It was a great way to celebrate his birthday Jan. 20. (Max)

I’ve never seen this documentary. It’s going on my list. You may remember that I love David Lynch films. I think I’ve seen every one except Dune; and, of course, Twin Peaks.

The Player (B+). I bet this movie would have been a solid A if I had seen it in the 1990s (and I was an adult then...preteen and teen me wouldn't have appreciated it like I did as an adult.) Satire of Hollywood, but it's been done so much since then that it kind of diluted the impact for me that it would have had in 1992. I need to see more of Altman now. (Max)

I saw it when it first came out and remember really liking it. But then I love Robert Altman films as much as I love David Lynch films. Which other Altman films have you seen?

About Schmidt (B+) It's Alexander Payne. I thought about tracking down the novel, but apparently Payne changed so much about it. (Library DVD)

I somehow missed this one. It’s on my list.

Down Low (B+) Lukas Gage (White Lotus S1, Fargo S5, other things) wrote and co-starred in this movie with Zachary Quinto. Quinto is a man with a terminal illness, who hires male escort Gage. It's a dark comedy that is also poignant. And Judith Light is a supporting role as the nosy neighbour. (Library DVD)

This sounds interesting.

Red Rocket (A24!) B: It was done well as it is A24, but...a porn star (Simon Rex) returns from LA to his small town Texas town in 2016 (people watch the summer 2016 about the elections later that year) and begins a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old (almost 18, but...) (Kanopy, free with library card)

Dicks: The Musical (B). The first half was so much better than the second half. It's basically the Parent Trap but between two adult twins who look nothing alike. Megan Thee Stallion stole the movie with her one song. Megan Mullally and Nathan Lane were great, but the movie just lost steam in the second half. The first half went hard against toxic masculinity tropes. (Max. And A24!)

I’m a big fan of A24. I’ll check out almost any film they are involved with.

I'm also doing a Truffaut cycle at the moment (one a week) and have watched or rewatched Shoot the Piano Player, The Soft Skin, Jules et Jim, Two English Girls, The Last Metro and Day for Night.

Fun. Truffaut makes me think of the pre-streaming, pre-DVD, pre-video (!) days when indie art houses ran double features (!) of Truffaut, Fellini, Bergman, etc films. It was a different time. Now we’ll probably see the demise of all, or most, movie theaters in the near future.
