I believe it is going to be a huge problem. We will have to create some new kinds of jobs for people to be paid to do or, obviously, businesses will have 40% fewer potential customers. There is some precedent for replacing old jobs with new jobs. For example, when we lost a lot of manufacturing jobs to automation and offshore outsourcing, we also created jobs in the new “green” industry. But a lot of individual humans get caught in any huge change. And AI taking over 40% of existing jobs will be huge. Of course, Gates could be wrong. But I would not bet on that.
