And yes, it's one of the rare times where they caught lightning in a bottle between Cybill and Bruce. It's a shame they did not get along back then. I've watched interviews where the creator talked about the fact that Cybill was not prepared for the long hours and grueling schedule that existed in making a weekly one hour dramedy. Made worse by the fact that as the leads, Maddie and David were in nearly every scene. The creator said Cybill grew tired and complained quite a bit. But when they yelled action, she was professional and hit all her marks. It's always interesting to me when it's revealed that actors don't get along on projects. I mean, it's a job for them. They are not there to make friends. Sometimes you clash with people personality wise.
He made no mention of jealousy. But the tabloids had a field day with Cybill hating Bruce because she was the name. He was virtually unknown but he sorta eclipsed her. Again, I think any playing a straight man to the crazy/silly/clownish one will be eclipsed just by the nature of how outrageous the silly one gets to be.
I do love this response Bruce gave on Arsenio Hall.
