A very Happy New Year!! It's 2009 in Port C, and of course, intrigue is brewing! Let's see: the conflict between Sonny and Jason is finally heating up and could soon come to a head, as Johnny is once again sprung from the slammer; plucky Nadine sucks it up and testifies in front a Congressional subcommittee, with Nicholas by her side and Carly and Jax are both getting cold feet over their divorce. Almost forgot to mention the horrendous fight that Spinelli and Maxie had over Winifred--who could very possibly break up their friendship!
We start off with Sonny, who's first seen drinking with Luke at the Haunted Star. Luke tells him about the latest frame-up du jour of Johnny, who was arrested after Anthony paid a man to say he hit him.
Johnny is sitting in the slammer, and refuses to accept his family's help in anyway--but doesn't know that Luke has asked his new brother-in-law Sonny for a favor.
Sonny tells Luke that he will pay Johnny's bail; adding that he feels he owes it to Johnny after kidnapping him and holding him last year. (Gee, ya think??)
Johnny gets the good news that he's free to go right when Claudia and Lulu are starting to fight in front of him at the PCPD--and Claudia realizes that it was Sonny who came through.
Claudia tells Sonny later that she realizes the enormous risk that he took, and that she will make it up to him. We shall see...
On to Nadine. She's testifying in front of a Congressional subcommittee in Washington, DC, over the patent for a tractor part that she inherited from her Aunt Ralene--which is now being used by the Equinox Corp., a major defense contractor.
With Nicholas at her side, she tells the Congressmen how she doesn't want it used to kill anymore servicepeople and when she withheld the patent, she was harassed by Equinox. One Congressman actually had the nerve to tell her she was breaking the law by impacting national security--so Nicholas on the break had papers drawn up which would transfer the patent to him, and take the heat off Nadine.
And yes, this is another case of someone taking a risk to help someone else--as Nadine gently reminds Nick that if HE were convicted of breaking the law, he could be deported! Nick says he's willing to take the risk, like the gentleman he is.
Now, Carly and Jax's settlement conference. Both lawyers (Alexis and Diane, the ONLY lawyers in Port Charles) are also there. It starts off slowly, but Alexis lets her true feelings for Carly come out; actually calling her a train wreck! Diane also gets her licks in; calling Jax a traitor among other things.
Carly takes the high road and tells everyone, yes, that she did indeed fail Jax, but not to doubt her love for him at all, since she loved him then, loved him now and will always love him--and then walked out.
Jax and Carly both met with their respective lawyers later--with Carly telling Diane to drag out the proceedings and Jax telling Alexis that he didn't want a divorce after all. So maybe they could reconcile??
Finally, Spinelli and Maxie. As we all know, this duo made love yesterday--and Spinelli is hurt to discover that Maxie only did it to keep him away from Winifred.
A huge fight breaks out between them and I was really afraid that this could be the end of Maxinista and Spinelli, as they showed Maxie remembering some of the good times she had had with Spinelli.
Maxie decides to try and fix it, so she races to the waterfront, where she sees Spinelli at his usual spot on the piers--just before the FBI arrests him on violations of the Patriot act!! And of course, we can thank Priestess Winifred for this one, as she's been working with the FBI...hopefully Spinelli will be free on Monday?? Can only hope!
