General Hospital Update for Tuesday, 23-May-2000

This was a double or triple hankie day, so be prepared.
Theepisode starts out with Jax & Chloe on the docks; moonlight, romance, ripping headache! So off to GH.
Liz is in her studio ripping boxes apart with a boxcutter with much gusto. Emily shows up at first oblivious to Liz's mood. She catches on though enabling Liz to bemoan how Lucky doesn't want her.
Nik approaches Lucky at the boxcar. When Lukcy jumps down & approaches him, Nik backs off afraid Lucky is going to punch him. But Lucky instead pulls him into a big hug.
Hannah has hopped into AJ's convertible (shouldn't Aj have switched to a roofed car after his accident with Jason, just to be safe & protect any other passengers from flying out?) Hannah grabs the keys out of the ignition to prevent Aj from driving.
Sonny asks Tony to explain again to him what is happening. Tony explains that the placenta is ripped such that it is a continuous bleeding wound, it can't be repaired because it is like a sponge. The baby is too young to be born, and they need to act fast or else Carly will bleed to death. Sonny asks to be allowed to go in & talk with her. He approaches Carly, sits down, touches her hand & looks at the fetal monitor, the heart rate is 120. (commercial break)
Lucky apologizes to Nik for not seeing him sooner & assures him that Lulu and Nik are the only reasons he came back to Port Charles. Nik says he understands why Lucky went to Lulu first. & then proceeds to assure him the Liz loves him, and is hurting over his treatment of her. He offers Lukcy a place to stay. But Lucky tells him he has a place, pulls him into a hug again, and then says "I'll see you soon".
Emily tries to reassure Liz that Lucky loves her, but he's screwed up in the head from everything he's been through. Em then takes off so she doesn't break her curfew, and Liz returns to breaking down boxes (what are these boxes from?). In her fervor of cutting, she cuts her hand, and heads to GH.
Back at the Q's Alan wonders whether Grandfather wasn't exaggerating Aj's drunkeness. Eddie & Lila come into the room, and Eddie calls the police to report AJ is driving drunk.
Back in Aj's car, Aj is wallowing in self-pity. He points out that drunks know how to relax, so they don't hurt themselves, just others. Hannah attempts to call the hospital to check on Carly, but AJ stops her so instead he can tell her what a lousy day he had. He describes seeing Sonny, Carly, and Mikey in the park, and then Carly at him home. He tells how he grabbed her, but "didn't push her". Although he does admit the accident wouldn't have happened if he hadn't shown up drunk. Hannah tells him to he needs to stop drinking, but AJ says he doesn't want to stop drinking because he likes it. & furthermore, "a little vodka helps him forget how Carly turned him into someone no better than her".
Back at the hospital Sonny notices the fetal monitor now shows a heart rate of 60. He positions himself to look at her stomach & addresses the baby. "You changed me, you made me a father. You cahnged how I look at people. Your mother for instance . . . You would have loved her, I mean you already love her. You can feel her heart beat. . . She loves you and I love you . . . It's going to be a long time til I hold you, or you see my face, or hear your mother's voice again, but I don't want you to be scared, because everything is going to be all right, little boy. & some day . . . Until then I'll always hold you in my heart. I have to go, I have to go, good-bye"
Sonny walks out to Tony & tells him to go ahead with the procedure to save Carly. He returns to the window to watch. (commerical break)
Nik runs into Helena at the docks. They discuss his seeing Lucky, Helena praise her efforts to return Nik's brother to him; "I'm not the enemy, I'm the one who brought Lucky home".
Meanwhile, Stephan shows up at the boxcar to see Lucky.
Hannah and Aj continue to go back & forth, with AJ drinking more from his handy flask. He starts to lash at her, that all her sympathy for him is really about getting the inside track to return to Sonny. He points out she should be thanking him for taking care of Carly. Then Taggert shows up.
At GH, Jax & Chloe arrive to see Tony about Chloe's headache. As they're talking the spot Sonny's back looking in on Carly. Tony tells them that Carly had an accident.
As Carly is prepped by the doctors & nurses, Sonny watches. His expression itself is heartbreaking. (commercial break)
Aj proclaims himself to be celebrating Hannah's emminent return to Sonny. Tagg's isn't pleased.
Helena assures Nik that her only motivation is to please him. Nik responds "I'm sure your lying, but in case I'm wrong, Thank you".
Lucky again sticks to the party line that Helena resuced him from Faison, and that he owes her his life.
At GH, Liz comes in & a nurse takes her away to get stiches. Tony assures Chloe that her headache is a normal reaction to the radiation, but he wants a cat scan to be sure.
The Dr comes out to Sonny, and assures him that Carly came through the procedure fine and that there were no complications. Sonny asks to be able to go in & see her. As he sits next to her this time, he looks & sees the fetal monitor shows a heart rate of 0.
He reaches for her hair; "Carly, the Dr says you're going to be ok. No complications. The baby isn't a complications, this baby was our life, just ask us. you have to listen to me, don't worry about him, he's going to be all right. He's going to a place where he'll be safe & happy. & he'll never be afraid, he'll never be hurt. So, you dream about him, you have one last dream about our boy". Sonny continues to rest his hand near her head & rests his head on her stomach. (let the crying commence)
Next up on the docks is Helena & Stephan. Helena tells him that Nik thanked her & that he is starting to turn, & realize that Stephan is the enemy. Stephan doesn't blink, but says that he just saw Lucky, and that Lucky will soon tell the truth. Helena calls Stephan on his bluff, and Stephan says he won't underestimate her anymore and walks away.
A nurse comes in & asks Sonny to step outside while she checks on Carly. Sonny walks to the waiting room chairs & he rests his head in his hands. Jax, who is awaiting Chloe sees Sonny and seems to be about to approach him when Liz comes out & goes to Sonny. She asks him what is wrong. He tells her "we lost the baby". Liz sits down next to him & puts her arm on his shoulder, he is oblivious to all around him.
Em arrives home & gets filled in on the events of the evening. Tagg & Hannah deliver AJ, who holds his hands up "Look, no handcuffs". Aj continue to resopnd to any jibs with sarcasm. The phone rings. AJ apologizes to Lila for coming back to the house viz Taggert & Hannah. He asks for his keys so he can go the the hotel. Alan reports back on the phone call, an update from the hospital on Carly's condition, and that the baby didn't make it. (commerical break)
Tony clears Chole to leave although he wants to schedule an full appointment for the next day. As they are about to leave they notice Sonny & ask how Carly is, Tony says Carly will be ok, and although he doesn't comment directly on the baby, his non-reponse says it all. Jax comments that no one deserves to lose a child.
Lucky breaks into Liz's studio after she doesn't respond to his knocking. He looks around at her paintings, and looks concerned (?)
Back to the docks where Hannah assures Taggert that she is over Sonny & wants to be with him. Kiss, Kiss.
At the Q's, AJ pours himself some move vodka. Lila calls to him "Aj, I've prayed so hard that you'd stop drinking before you did something you couldn't take back. & now it's too late. Aj, please, stop." Aj drinks. Edward takes Lila away. Everyone gets in one last crack to AJ, as he continues to drink & shoos Alan (the last one) away.
Sonny is telling Liz what happened. He says he had no choice, "the baby was too young to be born, by taking him I saved Carly. She doesn't know yet, but you know what, maybe that's better. She gets to spend a little more time with him." He then asks Liz to hold him for a little. (this bothered me for some reason, admittedly maybe it was jealousy, because I really wanted to hold him & make everything better. But also, because I know Carly wouldn't like Sonny getting any comfort from Liz)
A heartwrenching episode.
