For those of you who may have short attention spans and are
unable to read through this 100+ lines o' text post, I offer the
Reader's Digest Condensed version first:

1. Jason and Sonny talk business and Brenda while Sonny's Angels
coo over Michael (who's wearing a very cute hat).

2. Laura and Nik heart-to-heart over the 'other' rape rumor, and Laura
puts Nik's mind at ease.

3. AJ and Carly foreshadow a future relationship.

4. At the PCPD, Stefan and Laura talk about Luke's possible role
in KatyDead's demise (meanwhile Luke enters, and mentally presses
his nose to the glass window...).

5. Jerry steps in deep doo-doo and Bobbie shows up with a
Handi-Wipe.

And now for the Extended Dance-Mix Updater's Cut:

Somewhere in a Fool's Paradise:

Sonny's Angels (Lenore, Cindy, Maria) babysit Michael while Jason
calls Carly. He assures Carly that Michael's fine, and she assures
him that his assurances are unnecessary... she trusts him.

Sonny tells Jason that Carlos loaned out a lot of money 6 months
ago, and now he's in the process of tracing it to the borrower.

At the Outback:

Brenda squeals at Robin (a sound which makes my cats flee from
the room in terror) and waxes rhapsodic about her trip with Jax.
Robin asks about Sonny and Brenda announces that the situation
is resolved (in yet another Brenda 'insta-cure'....just like her drug
addiction and nervous breakdown). Jerry and Jax enter in the
midst of a heated conversation about the docks renovation.

In the Park:

Laura offers Nikolas her help, but Nik insists that he's fine. Laura
goes on to say that had she known he'd been shot, she'd have
returned immediately after. Nik absolves her and insists that her
presence wasn't necessary. After a bit of burrowing, Laura arrives
at the intended topic: Nikolas telling Lucky about "the incident"
from her past. "What happened between me and Luke was intensely
private and no one has the right to put a label on it," she says.
And after some volleying over descriptive semantics, she states
her bottom line: "I've never accused Luke--so no one else can."
Nik says she's protecting Luke. "If that's how you see it..." she
replies.

Nik asks about Lucky. Laura tells him that he's very angry, and that
she knows that he probably did something to provoke Nik into telling
him about the Big Bad Night. Nik said that Lucky told him his father
had raped Laura... which makes him a product of rape. Laura assures
him that "you're here on this earth because I wanted a child. You
were a blessing to me... then, and now." She tells him "his father"
didn't rape her. "Did you love him?" he asks. "In my own way... yes,"
she responds. She goes on to tell him "don't try to understand it...
I still don't." And when Nik asks her what he's supposed to do,
she invites him to her riverside home on the banks of denial: "Accept
it," she says, "Hold it inside you and go on." She goes on to say
that she's "here to stay, this time." "Does my uncle know?" he asks.
"No" she replies, "Does it matter?" "You tell me," he replies, and
leaves a pensive-looking Laura behind.

At the Outback:

AJ walks in looking for Jason. Robin tells him Jason left town
for a while and brought Michael with him. AJ reiterates
that his family's various kidnapping attempts were wrong and
"IMO, the baby belongs with his father." He asks if Carly would
know, and then immediately apologizes for bringing up Jason's
former nookie partner. Robin says no apologies are necessary,
as she's Jason's nookie recipient now. "And Carly?" AJ asks..
"Everyone's trying to do what's best for Michael" Robin replies,
cryptically.

Meanwhile, on Fantasy Island:

Maria is taking Jason and Michael's picture. Jason wants to send
it to Carly to further assure her they're okay. Sonny enters and they
talk about the Q's and Carly's fear that they might try to take Michael
away again. "Do you like her?" Sonny asks. "Most of the time," he
replies, but also states that he loves Robin. "You're in love with
one woman and have a child with another," Sonny declares (perhaps
recognizing his own potential image in the mirror that he's offering to
Jason) "Pretty crazy situation... not just for you but for the kid..."

At the PCPD:

Taggert walks in to 'question' Stefan. Stefan asks about his attorney,
and Taggert says "they're all busy"... but he hopes they can take this
opportunity to chat alone and "build a repoire". Stefan balks at
the idea and Taggert invites him to put his "good-for-nothing,
smug, royal hein-ey" in the chair. Stefan doesn't budge,
so a staring match ensues, which is interrupted by an Unidentified
Officer who whispers sweet nothings in Taggert's ear. Taggert
leaves, and Laura enters.

She wastes no time getting to her point: Why did Stefan tell Nik
about That Nameless Thing between Luke and her? "Protecting
your past is not my responsibility," he replies. "Nik is an innocent
boy... so is Lucky, and they are both suffering because of you," she
says. "No," Stefan asserts: it's because of Laura "and that cretin"
she married. Laura goes on to say that she'd always wondered why
Nik saw the worst in her, but now she understands why: he saw her
as a rape victim who fell in love with the man who violated her.
"How could you *do* that to him?" she asks again, "You weren't
there! You don't know what happened!" "You *told* me what happened!"
he replies, and reiterates that he told Nik because he wanted him
to understand that, no matter what, Laura would always be faithful
to Luke, and that her rejection of Nik is not because of some
inadequacy of Nik's, but because of her blind devotion to Luke.

Laura returns to the subject at hand: "I never told you I was raped
by Luke.... I might have said we had a 'bad night'..." "Yes," Stefan
replies, "And you were obviously making excuses for him. But I made
it my business to find out the truth!" That topic grinds to a halt,
as Laura commands him to "stop playing her", but as a segue to
their next conversation, he adds: "If Nik has a realistic picture
of you, it will only serve him well, particularly in light of recent
events..."

"What recent events?" Laura asks. And Stefan paints the picture
of his rather unlikely role in Katherine's death (why would he
leave incriminating evidence in his own desk drawer?) and then
adds that Luke is the one providing the frame... as revenge for
him telling Nikolas about the rape.

At the Outback: Nik meets Robin for dinner. He tells her about
his meeting with Laura. Robin says that it's clear from Laura's
letters that she loves him a lot. Nik doesn't know what to
believe.

At the LooneyBin:

AJ visits Carly, and Carly is wary of his motives. AJ assures her
he's here to support her because he heard Jason and Robin were
back together again and Michael was out of town. "I may be in an
institution, AJ, but I'm not crazy," Carly says, "You hated me ever
since I drugged you. Can we at least be honest about that?"
"I'll admit I'll never forget what you did," AJ replies, "but I've
had to ask a lot of people to forgive me, so I guess I can do the same
for you." "Right. We should go fishing sometime," Carly banters,
(reminding me how much I used to enjoy those two characters
together. It's been a long time!) Carly softens and says that her
life is pretty miserable. AJ is sorry... he knows what it's like
to hit rock bottom.

He eventually gets around to discussing his ulterior motive
(which seems to put Carly at ease... she knew
he had one in there somewhere): Where's Jason? Carly asks
him why he needs to know. AJ says there's trouble with the
unions again. Carly hopes it isn't serious, but says that she
can't tell AJ where Jason is. "Instructions," she adds. AJ
asks if she'd at least call Jason for him. Carly says that
she promised him she wouldn't call him. "I understand,"
AJ says, "Once you start breaking promises, it's difficult
to get people to trust you again." They exchange weighted
pleasantries and AJ leaves.

Back at the Island of Misfit Mobsters:

Sonny continues his lecture: "When you have a child with someone,
it's a lifelong commitment." "I can't stop being Michael's father
anymore than I can stop loving Robin," says Jason. "You're in a
helluva mess," says Sonny, (the man who's well acquainted with
such messes) and goes on to wonder why Jason allowed
Carly to lie about the baby's paternity in the first place. Jason
responds in rather Vulcan tones that it seemed like the right thing to
do at the time. He goes on to explain that Robin was in Paris,
Sonny was gone, and that his life had become a little too uncluttered
and ordered. He lived in one room at the penthouse, leaving the rest
untouched, and the majority of his life was driven solely by the rigors
of his job. Carly and Michael added a dimension that wasn't there
before, and he liked it.

Their conversation turns back to Sonny, who wistfully tells Jason
that this was his dream: to live in a house by an ocean and to have
the pick of any woman he wanted. "I make it..." he says, "except
for the woman part... and it's my own damn fault. It's a good life,"
he adds, "but I'm still waiting to enjoy it." "You hate it here,"
Jason observes. "No.... sometimes," says Sonny. "Then come
back," advises Jason, and adds that Brenda's out of danger now
that they're no longer an item. Sonny says Jason can't give up his
position now. It'd cost him his respect, which he worked hard
to earn. Jason insists that it wouldn't matter. Sonny plays
his trump card: "I'd want her back," he says, and insists that it's
impossible for him to live in the same city as Brenda. They'd just
fall back into old patterns and destroy each other.

Sonny receives a phone call: it's his informant about the loan...
Jerry Jax was the one who borrowed the money from Carlos....

At the Outback:

Jerry seems more agitated about the docks situation. He wants to
move quickly, but Jax wants him to 'stay cool'. He and Brenda
leave and Jerry gets a phone call. "Not yet," he says to the
unidentified caller, "A couple of months... maybe more.... whatever
you say..." He leaves the club... only to be clubbed in the parking
lot. Later, Bobbie finds him and her nursing instincts kick in.

At the PCPD:

Luke walks in looking for Commissioner 'Bubba'. He sees Laura
and Stefan through the window of the interrogation room. Inside,
Laura insists Katherine's death was an accident, but Stefan
disagrees. And the final scene is Luke's eyes riveted to the sight
of his wife talking with his worst enemy.

End of Update!
