                            GH Update for 08/16/96
                            By John R. Andrews, UIC

As all loyal readers of Mr. Updates Friday GH updates know, he has long
believed that just because an update is full of snide remarks and off color
innuendos doesn't mean it can't also offer valuable and timely information. To
that end, today's update will answer the question that I'm sure has long nagged
at all of you. Which is, what the heck do those little numbers in the
triangles mean on the bottom of plastic bottles, anyway. Yes, this question
will actually be answered here today - eventually, but first the update.

Scene 1
Monica's beeper goes off in more ways than one since she's in bed with Dr.
Dorkman. Turns out that it's Alan buzzing, but they ignore it while they play
another round of Dirty Gynecologist.
Scene 2
Stephan, who is having dinner with Alan, encounters Luke and Laura dining at
the same restaurant. They exchange a few words.
Scene 3
Outside Luke's, Gina apologizes to Sonny for being rude to him when they met in
park. When she thanks him for taking care of Stone, he realizes for the first
time who she is. [BTW, did you check out the old Gina lately? She's on the
syndicated program "Unhappily Ever After", the truly awful rip off of "Married
With Children." Though the program may be bad, she looks great as the bimbo
Christina Applegate counterpart.]
Scene 4
Meanwhile inside, Mike gives Robin and Jason some hints for their upcoming
vacation. Kevin and Lucy arrive and are surprised to find Felicia, as they
presumed she was going away with Tom.
Scene 5
At home, Mac frets to Katherine about Felicia. When the doorbell rings, Mac
finds Tom who announces, "I want you to arrest me." Tom demands that either Mac
arrest him or back off. Although his eyes twinkle at the thought of strip
searching Tom, Mac refuses.
Scene 6
Kevin, Lucy, and Felicia blabber about Mac and Tom [yawn].
Scene 7
Gina tells Sonny she desperately regrets her treatment of Stone. "Regrets will
eat you alive," Sonny remarks from experience.
Scene 8
When the bedbound Monica finally returns Alan's call, he apologizes for their
earlier spat and asks her out to dinner. She tries to back out, but he puts it
on very personal terms, so she gives in, afterwards, apologizing to Dr. D.
Scene 9
When Luke criticizes Alan for dealing with the Cassidines, Laura tries to put a
better spin on it saying it's about GH.
Scene 10
Alan confirms to Stephan that Mercy Hospital is going to try to buy GH, and he
needs a large amount of capital to hold them off.
Scene 11
Gina continues to kvetch about her and Stone, but Sonny assures her that Stone
didn't hate her. Gina then explains why she was so upset in the park saying
that Kevin repeatedly hurt her badly in front of the class.
Scene 12
More Felicia defending Tom [yawn, yawn].
Scene 13
Tom suggests they go over to Luke's to talk to Kevin and Felicia. Mac agrees,
but as they are about to leave, Robin arrives with the news that she's going
away with Jason immediately. Mac insists she wait until he returns from Luke
despite Robin's objections. Katy volunteers to stay with Robin and listen to
her pouting.
Scene 14
While Katherine tries to explain Mac's behavior to Robin, she almost slips up
and tells about Mac's suspicions of Tom. To cover up, she tells Robin to split,
and she'd smooth Mac's ruffled feathers.
Scene 15
Back at Luke's, Felicia offers up the idea that maybe the stalker is after her
out of jealousy of her relationship with Tom [I still wish it were Audrey or
Simone].
Scene 16
Monica joins Alan for dinner as Stephan departs. Alan has decorated the table
with roses and spews compliments to Monica in a giddy fashion; she is
bewildered.
Scene 17
Stephan stops by Luke's and Laura's table and remarks that he and Laura need to
discuss Nikolas. When she suggests that then wasn't the appropriate time (as
Luke stares silently at Stephan), Stephan baits her by saying he thought she
wanted to be kept informed about her son. At that point, Luke pointedly
excuses himself so they could talk and tells Laura to meet him at the Club when
they are finished. As Stephan sits down, Laura glares at him knowing that he
intentionally engineered the whole incident.
Scene 18
In a good scene, Stephan and Laura face off over Nikolas. He tells her she must
go through him to see Nikolas; she sarcastically asks why he's so afraid of her
since they had Nikolas for his whole life.
Scene 19
Luke returns to his club and pours himself a stiff drink. Sonny asks if it's
Cassidines and politely offers again to handle it "nice quick and clean."
[now that's a real friend] "Maybe someday," Luke replies, but not yet.
Scene 20
While waiting for Robin at Luke's, Jason is approached by the guy Sonny sent to
New York. He asks Jason to take the job since he's got some babe in town.
Jason says ok if Sonny approves, but the guy asks him not to tell Sonny
[anybody smell a set up?], and Jason showing some true brain damage stupidly
agrees.
Scene 21
The Fearsome Foursome continue to discuss possible stalker suspects. Kevin
discounts that someone is after Felicia over Tom.
Scene 22
When Kevin sees Gina at the bar (ordering water, of course), he calls her over
to the table and gushes out praise for her, but she snaps that she can't take
his games anymore; Kevin looks perplexed.
Scene 23
Laura angrily rebukes Stephan for saying she's ashamed of Nikolas and saying
she wouldn't have tried to see him even if Helena hadn't threatened her. As she
leaves, she stops by Alan's and Monica's table and tells them about Nikolas and
the Cassidines to prove she's not ashamed of him. During the conversation,
Alan comments that they are celebrating the anniversary of their second
wedding; something, Monica's face reveals, she forgot.
Scene 24
Gina tells Kevin she quits, but he insists he has no idea what he did. After
she leaves, Lucy says he was supposed to be nice to her so what happened. "I
don't remember," Kevin replies.
Scene 25
Back at home, Robin is packed and splits.
Scene 26
Alan and Monica discuss Stephan and the Cassidines. She says she doesn't trust
him, but Alan maintains Stephan is GH's only hope; however, Alan is intrigued
by the portrait of Laura over Stephan's mantle. He then confides in Monica
that GH is in dire straits [no, not the band, silly] and unless it gets a large
confidential influx of cash some damaging information may come out, and he
won't be able to protect someone. "Steve?" Monica gasps. Alan looks serious
but does not actually answer.
Scene 27
Katherine tells Mac she told Robin to go. He isn't really angry but worries
about Jason working for Sonny. "Well, he won't be working on this trip,"
Katherine reassures him - wrongly.
Scene 28
Nikolas asks Stephan about Laura. "Your mother is a formidable woman. We must
never underestimate her," Stephan answers with a note of respect.
Scene 29
Laura tells Luke that she had to show Stephan she wasn't ashamed of Nikolas so
she told Alan and Monica. Luke isn't thrilled at the thought, but he doesn't
say anything.
Scene 30
The stalker party at Luke's finally breaks up. As Lucy sits and reflects on
Kevin's recent inexplicable violent and abusive behavior, she notices that
Kevin's napkin is torn in two dividing the picture suspiciously like Felicia's
photo.

And now as promised:

From a brochure by The Council of Plastics and Packaging in the Environment

     1. PETE, usually pronounced "pet". Polyethylene terephthalate.
        Examples are clear soda bottles.

     2. HDPE, or High density polyethylene. Examples are milk jugs.

     3. Polyvinyl Chloride. Some soda bottles are made out of this too.
Maybe referred to as just vinyl probably to hide the fact it
        contains chlorine.

     4. LDPE, or Low density polyethylene.

     5. Poly-propylene. Example is plastic grocery bags.

     6. Polystyrene, commonly known as styrofoam.

     7. Other, even the Plastics Council doesn't know what's in it.

Most recycling programs accept 1. and 2., as markets for recycling these are
fairly well-developed and new ones are emerging, such as using PET bottles to
make thread. In fact, Patagonia clothes carries a line of PET-recycled sweaters
and jackets, which feel like soft wool!

Now aren't you glad you read this update. :)
