                            GH Update for 06/21/96
                            By John R. Andrews, UIC

The 1996 Nurses' Ball was big on emotion but only modest in creativity compared
to last year's "Over The Rainbow" theme.

Scene 1
Lucy barks orders as she prepares for the Nurses' Ball. Katherine follows suit
finally driving Amy, who is acting as their dresser, to quit them both in
exasperation.
Scene 2
Alan loosens up his pipes as Dr. Dorman looks over Monica. Everyone begins to
arrive dressed to kill. Finally, things get started, and Alan, to Lucy's
irritation, publicly thanks Katherine as benefactor and Ball underwriter. When
Katherine begins to make a speech, Lucy deftly commandeers the mike and pushes
her off the stage.
Scene 3
Carly (filling in for the injured Bobbie), Tony, and Lucas perform a
vaudevillian rendition of "Together Wherever We Go." Despite Carly's
acrobatics, wherever they go, it won't be Broadway, that's for sure.
Scene 4
Lucy [hubba-hubba] in a bare midriff [and that ain't all] cross-her-um,ah-
heart gown introduces Ned who sings some song about having a baby [no, not that
insipid Paul Anka tune] while pushing a baby carriage.
Scene 5
In between acts, Katherine tries unsuccessfully to suck up to Monica and
Amanda. Tony comments positively on Carly's dress which just happens to be one
of Bobbie's though not filled out quite as well.
Scene 6
Alan announces a $30 million gift from Mr. and Mrs. (RIP) Sonny Corinthos to
endow the Stone Cates Memorial AIDS Wing at GH. [I guess that's only fitting
since it is "blood money"].

Overheard at the Ball:
Guest 1: Did you know that Sonny Corinthos gave $30 million to GH?
Guest 2: Well, I had heard that for a short guy he was very well endowed.

Scene 7
Lucy overhears Katherine and Dara Jensen plotting for Dara to secretly sing
while Katherine lipsynchs on stage.
Scene 8
Audrey tells people that Steve is away [Ya, batting cleanup for St. Peter's
Archangels].
Scene 9
Lucy in yet another slinky outfit introduces Katherine who starts to lipsynch
"Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend." As she gets going, Lucy opens the curtains
revealing the singing ADA. Lucy then grabs the mike from Katy, and the two
proceed to snatch the mike back and forth in a humorous routine; however, both
their voices leave much to be desired.
Scene 10
Jax tells a backless red gowned Brenda that he has to leave on business but
will be back in the morning. She says she wants to stay to hear Robin's speech
and walks him out.
Scene 11
Lucy announces the death of Jon Hanley (Lee Mathis) and introduces singer Janis
Ian who sings a sad lament [I don't know the title since haven't heard her do
anything since "At Seventeen"] while we see images of Robin, Stone, and other
GH people dabbing the tears from their eyes.
Scene 12
Mac talks briefly and warmly about Stone, then presents Robin with a section of
quilt in Stone's honor, touchingly wrapping it around her.
Scene 13
Robin, the keynote speaker, delivers a very emotional and impassioned plea for
compassion and understanding for the victims of HIV. At the conclusion of her
words, Jason, who was watching from the back, comes to the stage, picks her up,
and carries her out. Carly looks on surprised and obviously disturbed at seeing
Jason and Robin so close, possibly due to her sexual relationship with him and
Robin's HIV positive status.
Scene 14
Lucy and Katherine banter backstage about the real meaning of the evening and
decide to stand together for the cause, but as Lucy checks on time, Kate
switches the dress in Lucy's rack.
Scene 15
Keesha, Simone, Carly, Audrey "She Got Legs" Hardy, and others do a chorus line
number. Meanwhile, things start to degenerate into slapstick as Katherine
turns out Lucy's dressing room lights and sprays her with hairspray to avoid
her seeing that Katy had Lucy's dress on. [How could Lucy's dress fit her?] As
Lucy stumbles around, her foot gets caught in a stage rope, and somehow she is
hauled upside down, dress falling over her head, and swung over the stage to
her intense humiliation and the audience's delight.
Scene 16
Back at home, Sonny answers the door to find Brenda. She embraces him lovingly.
"Damn," he says, "you feed to these alley cats once, and they just keep coming
back."
