It's the update for Thursday May 2! And your Fearless Updater deserves a
medal, for not only watching the cabin scenes thoroughly once, but over
and over, with finger on "pause" rather than "FF." Maybe, instead of a
medal, a Good BIG Stiff Drink?

WHO PLAYS GOD?
Mac is moving into his office and Garcia comes in with his badge and his
gun. There will be no ceremony, which is OK with Mac, who cares more for
the job than the hype that goes with it. Garcia didn't want the job, and
besides, he doesn't have the seniority for it (unlike Mac, you see.)
Mac's first business is to reopen the case on Laura. Luke comes in at
the tail end of this and is furious. Mac goes off to introduce Felicia
to a computer expert, and Tom comes in. Luke and Tom discuss the case:
Tom's main suspects of people who could have done the deed without a
qualm are Luke, Mac, or Sonny. Everyone else would make a mistake. Luke
figures it's someone playing God. Back at the computer, Felicia has
fixed it all, though she has no idea how. (Argh!) Tom kisses her. Mac,
meanwhile, leaves Luke alone with the files and video tapes (they demoted
Officer Johnson for this sort of thing!) and Luke watches till he hits
the Silver Fox, Edward, saying "if he were God, he'd have killed Damian."
A lightbulb appears over Luke's head.

BIG BAD MOMMA
A guard leads Laura into a bleak "recreation room" where she'll have the
privilege of being for three hours a day. Instantly a tough-looking
woman picks on a wimpy-looking woman, Jude. Laura finds out that the
tough one is B.D., a transfer from Statesville St. Prison in PA. She and
her boyfriend rampaged through a number of states until they were caught
and the boyfriend killed. She will spend the rest of her life in
prison. Jude, however, is innocent, but has been in jail almost a year.
Laura is taken out to be fingerprinted and Mac talks to her in the
hallway, so that "innocent" Jude, passing on her way to the lawyer, can
hear Mac tell Laura "we're trying to get you out of here as soon as
possible." Jude apparently reports back to B. D. They figure Laura is a
snitch.

When Laura is taken back to the recreation room, B.D. confronts her,
calling her a "bunny rabbit" and commenting on her pretty hair and face.
Laura asks if there's a point to this, so of course B.D. pulls out a
knife and threatens Laura. Laura gets big and mean. She asks B.D. if
she knows what Laura is in for, and she describes how she might have
killed Damian, and she asks B.D. if B.D. is really sure she wants to make
Laura angry. It works, and B.D. backs down, kicking Jude a bit on the
way past.

THE CARLY VIRUS SPREADS (Thank you, Tante Joan! I was having her worm
into places, but the virus analogy is just too apt.)
Carly overhears Bobbie and Tony discussing Monica's surprise party. When
A.J. comes to the hospital for his appointment with Tony, Carly worms up
and overhears a political discussion of how much A.J. is enjoying
politics. She meets A.J. and finds out about Monica's children. Then
Monica tells her she's looking forward to going home early tomorrow and
putting her feet up. Carly warns Bobbie, but she will delay Monica, and
Bobbie invites her to the party.

A.J. talks to Tony, who is hoping to get Jason to come to his
appointments. They decide that some guy named Jason made a remarkable
recovery, but that A.J.'s brother went away.

THE SIDAR THAT WILL NOT DIE
Well, the last time I tried something like this it was also SIDAR related,
what seems like years ago, when Miguel and Brenda were up to something...
that time I wrote "IhatethisIhatethis" all around the story, as a frame.
Let's see if this works.

Son In the cold, cold cabin, Sonny wakes up screaming. Brenda is ny
lov also awakened. Sonny stands by the window saying he hates snow. es
me, Maybe he's psychic like Lucy, but "Maybe I always knew I'd die he
's in the snow." Brenda can't stand on her sore ankle, and their alw
ays supplies consist of a candy bar, candles, the kerosene lamp and lov
ed not enough wood. Sonny tells Brenda she should have realized me,
he the man she's obsessed with was born and raised in Bensonhurst. cam
e t Even if he wanted to be, a hero he ain't. He doesn't know what o m
e a the heck he's doing. He's useless. "No you aren't." "Why, be- t K
ell cause YOU want it to be? Reality check. I'm a -- hood. Remem- y's
and ber? I'm not a mountain man. So even if - if - if I wanted to tol
d m your hero and you believed that, it doesn't make it true." He e h
e l breaks up the table for firewood, as smashing things is all he's ove
d m good for. Brenda murmurs "It wasn't supposed to be like this." e.
I w "Oh? How was it supposed to be? Brenda. Since we're stuck here, ant
to why don't you go ahead and fill me in? What result did you have be
wit in mind? I know, let me guess. I would think I'd lost you for- h S
onn ever, right? And then I would feel sorry for what happened be- y f
ore tween us and then - uh - you know, when I found you, never mind ver
. S how I was going to find you in a blizzard, I would go down on my onn
y l knees and beg forgiveness and then we would live in a castle ove
s m somewhere and then..." This is too much reality for Brenda, who e,
he' has been listening to the voices on the sides of this page, and s a
lwa she interrupts: "DON'T MAKE FUN OF ME!" She goes on: "I didn't ys
lov think [now THERE's a newsflash!] about anything beyond getting ed
me, up here. I didn't have a big plan, Sonny, because I didn't think he
cam I needed one. I thought that after we got alone together we'd e t
o m look into each other's eyes and we'd see how much we really loved e a
t K each other. Oh, God -- that was really stupid, wasn't it? I ell
y's forgot that you don't feel anything." "All right, yeah, OK, and
he that's me, OK, Man of Steel, right? I have a heart of steel. I tol
d m don't care about anything or anybody, right, except myself." e h
e l "Oh, no," sneers Brenda. "You care about your WIFE." She tries ove
d m to get him to stop pretending he loves Lily. He reloads the e.
I w wood. "Why can't you just say it, Sonny, just say it, I. Don't. ant
to Love. Lily. Can't you just tell me why you're still there? Why?" be
wit "She gives me joy. I care about her. She gives me peace. She's h h
im good for me. Probably like Jax is good for you." He asks about for
eve Jax. She won't talk about anything but Lily. "It's getting a r.
I d little old, Brenda, over and over again the same old song ... on'
t c She's my wife -- by my choice. Accept it!" "NO, I won't accept are
if that. I won't accept it till you tell me why." "...she's been we
die there for me through the toughest times in my life. She loves tog
eth me. She loves me as I am. She's never once tried to change me." er.
I w "I didn't try to change you." [On which planet?] They talk about oul
d r the wire: "All I ever wanted was the truth from you because I ath
er love you." "No, you loved the way you were with me, because it's die
wit the best you ever had. Harder, higher, farther, faster -- you h S
onn push it to the red line every time Brenda and who cares about the y t
han wreckage you leave behind?" "You're right. I don't care. Neither liv
e a do you. You love me and you know it.... Lily gives you love and not
her peace? What is that? Does Lily keep you awake at night, burn- min
ute ing? ...Don't you miss me? Tell me I don't live in your dreams!" wit
hou "My dreams are a dark place, Brenda, too dark for you and me.... t h
im. You only believe what you want to hear. So I'll say it, Brenda. Son
ny You matter to me, Brenda. I care whether you live or die. And lov
es it kills me that you set this all up, counting on me to save me,
I k you, and I can't." "I don't want you to save me, I just want now
he you to be with me." "Together in life and death, is that what lov
es you want? Huh? Right." "I just want us to be together again, me,
he you know, like we used to be. And I think we can be, if we real- cam
e t ly tried..." o m
e a "You only believe what you want to hear, see, or feel, otherwise t K
ell it doesn't exist. It's all about YOU, Brenda, it's something to y's
and live up to your expectations. It's not going to change, Brenda, tol
d m because you sure as hell won't. But see, real people live in e h
e l the real world, not in the one inside your head, and in the real ove
d m world nothing's changed, Lily is still my wife and you're not. e.
I w Give me my coat." He leaves, saying "It's not worth dying for ill
get and that's all you've accomplished. You rolled the dice with Son
ny both of our lives, Brenda, and all you got for your trouble was bac
k b an early grave." Brenda stays in the cabin, rocking back and eca
use forth. She lights the lamp. "Oh, Sonny, please come back." he
lov To my disgust, he does, with wood. He notes she's been crying. es
me. He says "No wonder you love me, you have such faith in me. No, Son
ny I would not leave you alone in a damaged cabin, in a snowstorm, lov
es with a sprained ankle and dying fire." She eats the chocolate, me
I k her favorite. They settle down. "Go ahead and sleep, sweet- now
he heart. Think about that castle." lov
es me.

Maybe TWO stiff drinks, AND a medal!!
