Date: Sun, 30 Oct 1994 21:38:44 CST From:Subject: GH: Update for Fri 10/28/94 GH Update for 10/28/94 By John R. Andrews, UIC Yes, update fans, it's another Friday and time for "Using Foreign Phrases To Seem More Literate That You Actually Are." Today's phrase is fairly common and can be applied in many everyday conversations. Ad nauseam, (Latin), to nausea; to the point of disgust or satiety. Pronounce it as you'd guess. I'll bet you can think of several uses already. For example: As John channel surfed across the cable, he inadvertently stopped on Rush Limbaugh and was immediately filled ad nauseam with the rotund Russ' xenophobic diatribe. Or perhaps: Betsy explained to her supervisor that she was late for work because, "I was driven ad nauseam by the network coverage of the O.J. Simpson trial." Scene 1 Luke and Mae Mae visit with the newly awakened Justus. Sean arrives to ask a few questions. Scene 2 At the Quartermain mansion, Mac, there by an invitation from Ned, fights his way through a pack of news jackals gathered at the door. Scene 3 Damian, limping along in his walker, comes to Tiffany's TV station to offer her what he says is a big story. Scene 4 Damian tells Tiffany he wants to state publicly that although he is a member of the ELQ board, he is outraged by the attack on Justus and had absolutely no knowledge of it. Then, in a masterful stroke of self-promotion, Damian tells her he is resigning from the board as a moral statement and further will be supporting Justus' position. Scene 5 Justus tells Sean that he can't identify his attackers. Luke jumps on Sean for not having made any arrests for the assault on Laura. Sean snaps back that Luke should save his words for the grand jury, but Mae Mae butts in with a word of doubt over Edward's guilt. Scene 6 Ned asks Mac if he's interested in another job, a top secret project involving the future of ELQ. Ned wants Mac to scout for large plots of land across the river, the bigger the eyesore the better. Mac guesses immediately [and you thought he was a total spam-brain] that Ned is considering moving the incinerator. Scene 7 In the L&B record camp, Lois shows Brenda a road schedule she has devised for the Idle Rich. She adds that Brenda will be in charge of the trip because she (Lois) will not be going. Brenda expresses doubts that Ned will be able to juggle the music gigs as well as his ELQ business. Lois snaps that's it's a lesson Ned must learn; he can't have everything. Scene 8 Felicia sees Mac writing in his notebook and starts asking about his case. Eventually, they lapse back into an argument about her telling Frisco about her pregnancy. Kevin arrives and takes up his usual bar position. Scene 9 Outside the Q's front door, Brenda defends Edward to the press, but Ned drags her inside and rebukes her for talking to them. She counters that he should be grateful because she came there to protect him from Lois. Scene 10 Edward and Lila discuss the grand jury proceedings. He tells her that having her with him makes it all seem manageable. Scene 11 Mac and Felicia continue to bicker ad nauseam; when she drags Kevin into the fray, he sides with Mac much to her annoyance. They eventually decide she doesn't care what they think. Lily comes into the Outback and hauls Cousin Itt outside for an important talk. She says she's ready to tell him all her secrets. Scene 12 Ned arrives at L&B to see Lois. When she shows him the "tour from Hell," to her amazement and disappointment, he says fine. She tries heaping on further seemingly bad conditions, but he continues to agree. Out of frustration, she begins yelling at him as Sonny and Brenda come in. After Ned leaves, Sonny gives her an ultimatum to work with Ned or forget it. She apologizes and agrees to treat Ned with the same respect as Miguel [does that include drawing and quartering?]. Scene 13 Ned returns to the mansion where Edward, Lila, Jason, and AJ are waiting for news from the grand jury. Jason expresses outrage [there was plenty of outrage going around today] over the attacks, and wonders why so many of the people who oppose their family end up in the hospital and when it might be his turn. Lila is shocked at the suggestion and orders an end to the subject. They turn on Tiffany's news program just in time to see Damian resign from the ELQ board at the same time mean-mouthing ELQ. In addition, he offers a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution [such a bargain, usually it's arrest and conviction] of Justus Ward's attackers. Ned expresses grudging respect for Damian's PR skills, but Lila is shaken and seems to be ill. Scene 14 Lily admits to Miguel that she was pregnant with his child when her father made her leave Puerto Rico. She says she told her mother in confidence, but her father found out and was so ashamed [understandable in this case] and threatened to kill Miguel if she didn't leave him. The baby, a boy, was taken away from her at birth and put up for adoption. Miguel asks the obvious question, "Where is he?" She says she doesn't know. Miguel [in his limited style] is outraged [see more outrage today], and says she had no right to do that. [Fellow GH viewers, I feel this was a watershed scene for Ricky Martin. No longer can people claim he didn't get a chance. This scene was a crucial climactic emotionally charged confrontation where he is informed not only of the deceit of his lover but the existence of a child of his as well. His performance was dull, monotone, and totally without emotional content. Several persons have posted that they thought he was attractive, and others that they liked his singing, but after this scene no one can argue he can act. Furthermore, you can forget the claim that it's because he's not a native English speaker, much of power should have been carried by body language and facial expression of which apparently he is totally ignorant. At this point, I wouldn't care if they replaced his scenes with commercials, because at least they would not drag down the rest of the show. Anyone encouraging Ricky Martin's acting career is doing him and his audience a disservice.] Scene 15 All the male Q's try to comfort Lila, but as usual they degenerate into mutual recriminations over who tried to off Katherine. Finally, Reginald interrupts and says he knows who tried to kill her. Scene 16 Justus and Mae Mae joke about the reward Damian has posted. They wonder what his motives really are. Suddenly, in mid-guffaw, Justus begins to cough up blood, and Mae Mae yells for help.
