Ok, here we go with my first attempt as a substitute updater. Feedback to
me at agraham1@cc.swarthmore.edu. Please let me know if the update was too
long (there was lots to tell!) - Amy

Storylines for today:
Hurricane KatyBell (Alan at his sarcastic best)
Monica's troubles
Ned waffles over breakfast
Lucky little sister/The name game - Spencer style
Lily oh Lily (Miguel haters with high blood pressure may wish to skip this)
The Q's and 'those Ward people'

KatyBell rants at Ned's secretary over the phone in the study because she
can't find Ned. [Guess there are no phones in the west wing]. She slams
down the phone as Alan walks in. He tells her to take it easy on the
appliances. Katy demands to know where Ned is. Alan tells her that if she
can't keep track of him, she shouldn't expect everyone else to do it for
her. She tries to tell him that she is simply asking for a little
courtesy. His response: "Blackmail may have gotten you a marriage, don't
expect the moon." She whines some more and he tells her to just wait until
he gets back into town. When Katy responds with a sarcastic "Why didn't I
think of that", Alan tells her that that's because she's always waiting
around for other people to solve her problems. Katy notes that he's in a
darker mood than usual and Alan tells her that she brings out the worst in
him. As Monica enters the room, Katy storms out to track down Brenda.

Monica tells Alan that she slept so deeply that she didn't even dream;
she's trying to block out thinking about the tumor even in her sleep. Alan
tells her that she needs to face the situation, and reviews the sequence of
events for her. He picks up the phone to make an appointment for her with
Dr. Cahill. Monica says no, she wants a second opinion. Alan's
question: "A second opinion of what?" Monica says it's her problem and
she'll manage it. Alan tells her that her way of 'managing' the problem is
to try and ignore it. Monica claims that she just doesn't have the time to
deal with it right now. Alan reminds her that time is crucial in a
situation like this; that the tumor needs to be removed. Monica explodes -
she'd appreciate some sensitivity on this. Alan tries to tell her that he
understands what she's going through; Monica thanks him for trying, but
says he has no idea what she's going through. She cuts the conversation
short and heads for the hospital. Alan catches up with her later at the
hospital. He urges her to see Dr. Cahill. He tells her that he's not
trying to step on her toes, but it's because he loves her.

Ned and Lois are eating lobster for breakfast and Ned talks about how happy
he is. Lois tries to convince him that he'd be even happier if he
committed to the music. He says that he has everything now that he has
her. She tells him that he has her forever, no matter what. Lois sees the
pained look in Ned's eyes and says "What?" Ned sits her down on the bed
and tells her that there's a "fairly fundamental truth" that he needs to
tell her. [Sharp intake of breath by the updater. Cut to commercial,
followed by a long 15 minutes before the scene continues] Ned tells Lois
that he's scared to death of losing her. She tells him he can't. Ned goes
into business-speak, saying that "Negotiations are coming up which will
make some decisive changes in my future." Lois tells him to talk English!
He tells her that he "foresees a time when he will end this double life".
He won't give Lois any details, but she's thrilled. They hug and Ned looks
like a deer caught in the headlights.

[Bring out the tissues] Lucky talks to his little sister and tells her that
they need to think good thoughts about their mother because she's in
trouble. He tries to explain 'the way things are in life' as he
understands it, while Luke listens at the door. Lucky tells his sister that
she'll love their dad - he's the greatest and that "if we have to, we'll
tell you all about Mom." [sniff] Luke can't take any more and slams out of
the nursery, looking to pound his head against the wall. We're saved from
Luke in over-emoting mode by the arrival of Bobbie. She tells Luke that
the bleeding has stopped. She says that although Laura is weak, she should
make it. Luke dashes off to go see her, telling Bobbie to let Lucky know.

Luke goes into Laura's room where she is still unconscious. He tells her
how much he loves her and that she can't leave him. He can't handle
parenting alone - he's not that strong. "We started down this road together
- the only way I know how to walk it is with you." [sniff] He's sure he'll
screw up if he has to raise the kids alone. With her eyes still closed,
Laura tells Luke that she's not going anywhere. He's ecstatic to see that
she's awake. She says she'll be OK and asks to see the baby. Bobbie comes
in and Laura thanks her for being in the operating room. Laura asks about
the picnic in the catacombs. Bobbie gets that far away look in her eyes
and says she'd forgotten how easy it was to get lost in there. Lucky comes
in and hugs Laura. He says that he held the baby and "I think she likes
me." Amy rolls in the baby and gives her to Laura. Amy & Bobbie leave.
The Spencers discuss names. Lucky says it should start with L, and Laura
says she wants to name the baby after her mother, Leslie. Luke suggests
Lulu for a middle name, so that the baby would be named after her mother
and grandmother. Laura rejects Leslie Lulu, so Lucky suggests just Lu -
"boy named Sue, girl named Lu..." [OK]. They all agree it's a great name.

Brenda is on the phone with one of the musicians when Hurricane KatyBell
comes storming in to L&B. [Who is dressing Brenda these days? She had on
this funky beige number that was too long for her and just a little too
tight in the back IMHO] Brenda makes nice with Katherine, who wants to know
where Ned is. Brenda says she can't help. Katy pretends to be interested
in the music biz, and asks where Lois is. Brenda tells her that she took a
couple of days to get away with her husband, and goes on about how in love
they are. She can't resist a dig: "Ah, true love ... well, you know,
right?" Katy says "Of course" and then says that she'd really like to meet
this wonderful husband of Lois'. Brenda tells her she'd be amazed, and
probably jealous, because you can see how much Eddie loves Lois.

Enter Miguel and his hair. [Must be bath day at the Morez household - his
hair looked bigger than usual]. Katy makes chitchat with him and asks if
he's ever met Eddie. He says no, but he must be OK since Lois is crazy
about him. Brenda hustles Katy out the door, then tells Miguel how much
she hates being nice to her.

Brenda and Miguel talk about Lois and Eddie, and Brenda says that they need
to find someone for Miguel. The talk turns to Lily and Brenda wants to
know why Miguel hasn't tried to find her. Miguel says it would be much too
dangerous. Turns out Lily's daddy was #1 crime boss in Puerto Rico, and
Miguel wasn't good enough for her. She was groomed to marry a President or
a prince, and he wasn't interested in playing the mob game. Lily's father
found out about them about the time Miguel's career started to take off.
One day she told him she didn't want to see him again and was gone. Brenda
thought this all was very sad and very romantic and asked what Lily was
like. Miguel tells her she's fishing for compliments because he'd already
said Brenda reminded him of Lily, but she was beautiful in every way.
Brenda tells him he knows how to make a person feel good [Gagging yet?]
Brenda offers to find Lily, but Miguel makes her promise not to. She hugs
him [though not very convincingly IMHO].

Edward joins Keesha and Jason in the study at the Q's. Edward quizzes her
about herself and her plans, with Jason kibitzing in the background. Her
current plans are opposing the incinerator he's building in her
grandmother's back yard. He wants to know why she doesn't just get married
and raise a family. Edward groans about liberal arts majors when she tells
him she's an English major. She asks him which part bothers him - the
liberal part or the arts part. He's impressed with her witty repartee. They
discuss focused training v. 'learning how to educate yourself' They agree
that MaeMae is a remarkable women. After Edward leaves, Keesha wonders why
she likes him so much. Jason admits he loves him always, but doesn't
always like him. Enter AJ He doesn't like the way that things are between
him and Jason, and resents being treated as the greedy capitalist. Keesha
& Jason talk about the importance of the Charles St. community. AJ talks
about how the 'ecology' of the community would be improved [umm, pick
another word AJ - economy maybe?] AJ also resents being painted as a
racist, but Jason points out that they picked one of the few ethnically
mixed neighborhoods, thinking that no one would care. Keesha promises a
fight. Later, Jason & AJ agree to disagree. When Edward comes into the
room, Jason tells them both that he's only fighting for what he believes is
right, not because he wants to fight the family. Edward warns Jason about
getting involved with the Ward people who are "admirable if somewhat
misguided". Jason may be getting more than he bargained for. When Jason
asks what he means by this, Edward says "Part of it is obvious, the rest is
very complicated." Edward tells Jason to "stay clear", then exits, leaving
the boys looking bewildered.
