to debunk the myth of the fictional hero detective. He wanted to convey what detective/police work is really like in H:LOTS and his book that inspired the show. Another thing he’s great at is being fair to all characters and to all sides of complex issues. The criminals and police are both written as real human beings. There are a lot of grey characters in his writing rather than heros and bad guys.
