Sadly, it's rare to see a live opossum around here. Plenty on the road though

and they're not playing...

Then there was the football-sized nest of yellowjackets that was behind a wall in the closet my sister & I shared.

That would be terrifying to me. I'm seriously scared of stinging insects. Dad one time had to knock down a good-size nest of yellowjackets right outside my bedroom and despite all his precautions, he was stung twice. Mom was stung by a wasp once; that was when she discovered she was (fortunately mildly) allergic to the suckers.

As an adult, we've had ant infestations, mice and the odd bat find their way into the house. Mice were dealt with by traps, relocating or the cats. Ants? I had some kind of powder that basically desiccated them. I would put it in a thin line between screen doors and the inside doors and down the crack behind the kitchen counter. I was very careful where I put it as I didn't want the cats to be able to touch it. Now, I resort to ant bait traps again trying to make sure the cats can't get into them.

Ants are pretty much a given every spring in our house. Mostly we see them in the kitchen, but occasionally I'll see one in the adjacent living room. We've already seen about a half dozen small black ants this past week, and I'm sure more are to come. Those we usually just squash, then if more continue to come into the house, I'll put out cotton pads soaked in peppermint oil to deter the rest.

The bats? Last time we had one, probably 7 years or so ago; hubby got it out of the bedroom so we could sleep. When we got up the next morning, the cats were just laying staring at the little cat hideyhole. Similar to this just the bottom portion with the hole. [link] The bat was inside where it was dark.

Hubby picked it up and put it out on the porch (closest door) the bat flew off once it was dark outside again.

Now bats are something we've been fortunate enough to never have inside the home. Not that I can remember, at least. I've only ever seen a few outside in my lifetime. I generally am cool with bats...as long as they stay outdoors where they belong!
