Stars Rose Byrne and Conan O’Brien. Byrne is Oscar-nominated as Best Actress for this performance, and she earned it.
It’s the story of Linda, whose daughter has an unspecified illness. Linda’s time is split between taking care of her daughter, holding down her job as a therapist, and dealing with a household crisis. Dad’s job requires him to travel a lot, and he is ZERO help. He tells Linda that he works hard and deserves to have fun in his free time. Meanwhile, Linda has no free time at all. He criticizes every move she makes and tells her her job is just “sitting in therapy all day.” Dude is a complete a-hole. And Linda’s daughter is no walk in the park either. I get it — having a debilitating illness must be so frustrating, especially for a kid. But this kid is next level needy. Add to that Linda’s patients, an assortment of seemingly helpless, needy people who expect Linda to solve everything for them, and you have the recipe for Linda to have a breakdown.
And the industry thinks this is funny. They are calling it a comedy/drama and a dark comedy, when in fact you can feel this woman’s anxiety bleeding through the screen in every single scene. To the point that it actually becomes hard to watch. I had to take breaks to get through it. But hey, I guess marketers find their laughs where they can. I didn’t laugh.
Anyway, it’s from A24, and it’s a very good movie. Take a Xanax and check it out, lol.
