In my case, I think a lot of it is about false hope. We start off the new year thinking it's going to be our best year ever and then it isn't. This year, I finally decided to cave to the inevitable and not bother with all the good luck traditions (eating pork and black-eyed peas is just plain tradition--nothing lucky about it).

Also, I'm just in general in a bad mood for most of January only because it's cold and gray and snowy and there's not much to do.
