They seem to try to copy other birds. I've seen them try to fit where the sparrows can fit due to being so small (and I've seen their pigeon cousins watch ducks swimming and repeatedly fly down to the water but then realise they're not swimmers and freak out and fly back to shore).

Poor dove with the thunderstorm and plant :(

There is a subreddit dedicated to "Stupid Dove Nests".

It sounds like you have some great feeders though. The birds will all be happy :)
