in Ireland and is based on Sally Rooney’s novel (which I read last year and liked). The series adaptation is very true to the novel. Sally Rooney is one of the screenwriters.
It’s a very character-driven romantic coming-of-age drama that tells the story of Marianne and Connell’s relationship from secondary school (high school) in their small town through their years at Trinity College in Dublin and their changing dynamics. Marianne is an outcast from an affluent family in her hometown but blossoms at Trinity. Connell is the working class son of a single mom who is Marianne’s family’s housekeeper. He is popular in his small town but struggles at Trinity.
Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal are both very good as Marianne and Connell. I liked this miniseries a lot and recommend it if you like this kind of thing.
