The movie revolved around Mary and ends with her as the caretaker of Downton as Cora and Robert retire to the Dower House.
A painting of Violet was featured prominently in scenes at DA, and it was clear that Mary was in fact the next Violet. They also showed flashbacks of fan faves, notably Matthew and Sybil at the end.
Me: :**))
MyMatthew and Mary. Loved them.
It's also amusing that the movie also centered around the fallout from Mary being a social pariah because she and Henry divorced. Which is pretty much the same SL that Fellowes showcased in S3 of TGA. But that takes place 50 years earlier, showing that the US was a bit more progressive in this regard. I am sure that parallel was intentional.
One thing I didn't understand was Mary hopping into bed with that scumbag who ripped off the Levenson fortune. This was earlier in the film. He was clearly up to no good from the beginning. Oh, Mary. But I think it was intended to be a call back to her "one night stand" with Pamuk. And that was mentioned.
Finally, really glad to see that Mary and Edith were in a very good place. They went shopping together in London, they have become friendly, and Edith stood by her (even with the side eye LOL) re: scumbag and that fall out.
