thriller about a girl driving out with her new boyfriend of about six weeks to his family farm to meet his parents. The movie was released in late August 28, 2020 in select theaters followed by being available to stream on Netflix on Sept 5 2020. It was a hard movie to catch if you didn’t have Netflix, which I do have access to now. That must have been precious few theaters it opened in for a week since it was still the pandemic and many movie theaters were still closed.
I had read the novel this movie is based on — same title by Canadian writer Ian Reid and I was curious about how it would be portrayed in film. When I heard that Charlie Kaufman was writing the screenplay and directing, it went to the top of my “to see” list. It took me five years to finally catch it.
If you’re up for a very surreal, nonlinear ride, I highly recommend this movie. I can’t tell you much more about it without risking spoiling you. The cast includes Jesse Plemons and Jessie Buckley as the boyfriend and girlfriend and Toni Collette and David Thewlis as his parents. I love so much of Charlie Kaufman’s work and this one did not disappoint.
