It took me a while to realize that hey, I don't need to pack EVERYTHING, and whatever I forget, I can often purchase at my destination (like the time I went to NC to visit Sis and forgot ALL my makeup). But comfortable shoes in my size aren't easy to find, so I pack an extra pair or two for every trip (including the last one, which was a simple overnighter). Like you, I usually just have a carry-on when flying; I've gotten very good at packing a LOT into a small space <g>.
