I also read a TON of her, starting with Locked in Time when I was 12. I love telling people, when I Know What You Did Last Summer comes up, that I "read the book" because it's such a weird thing to say about a slasher flick.

I don't think seeing the film is much of a substitute, though, since it completely changes the mystery and the stalker is turned into a serial killer -- though in the movie's defence, the outcome of the mystery in the book can't be filmed, because the audience would be in on it in a way they aren't in the book.

THAT SAID -- I also came across an audiobook of Ransom, which was one of my favourite books of hers, and it had also been updated, which was incredibly annoying because one of the big character elements for Dexter was that he'd had polio as a child. So now he's a character with a cell phone and he had POLIO as a CHILD?

I went and looked up when the last time someone had polio in the US and it was in the 70s.

Anyway. I get updating some books, but when I was a kid and I read, say, Are You There God, It's Me Margaret, they didn't update it for me. I just had to figure out that people used to use belts to keep their pads in place. I'm not sure why we think kids can't do that now.
