I swear you could plop him down in the middle of the United States with no map or GPS and he'd be home the following day. All the times I've been on vacation with him (as a kid) or gone somewhere more local with him, we were only ever lost once, and it was only for a brief amount of time (it was a particularly tricky roundabout-type situation in NC). I'm good with directions but not like him.
I'm cool with getting lost as long as I have supplies and a companion to talk things through with. Getting lost while on my own makes me a bit nervous. Fortunately, I don't get lost often.
A brief story...the summer after third grade , we spent 6 weeks in Dallas, Texas while Dad learned to fix some new-fangled IBM machine. IBM paid for Mom and me to join Dad in Dallas; we only had one vehicle though, so most days, Dad had it to attend class and Mom and I were stuck at the hotel. But once in a while, he'd catch a ride with a fellow IBM-er (many of them stayed at the same hotel) and Mom and I would have the car for the day. One day, we drove to a laundromat to wash some clothes, and as we were exiting the parking lot, Mom wanted to turn left. But I insisted the hotel was the other direction. She actually listened to me and turned right and we drove right back to the hotel. She never doubted me again...at least not when it came to directions <g>.
