Back in the 90s my family was travelling in Western NY and my mother went into a gas station and had the following exchange:
"Do you have a map?"
"A map? No, we don't sell maps."
"Ok. Do you know where I could find one?"
"I dunno, a hardware store?"
"Ok, well, can you tell me how to get to a hardware store? I need a map to go buy a map!"
"OH! You want a MAP. I thought you wanted a mop."
That story is better head that typed, because you need the Buffalo accent with its distinctive vowel sound, but I'm also realizing now that this would likely just not happen today at all. My mother would never be looking for a map! We'd just use our phones.
