And maybe not everyone’s cup of tea. It’s based on Colson Whitehead’s 2020 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about an abusive reform school for boys in Florida’s panhandle in 1962. It is fiction but based on a real reform school run by the state of Florida that somewhat shockingly only closed in 2011. It made me think of the Magdalene Laundries in Ireland and the movies about them, if you’re familiar with them.
The story is very straightforward but the director’s style is very unconventional. There was barely a straight shot in the whole movie so it may come off as a little too artsy to some.
Overall though, I highly recommend it unless you hate sad stories about serious subjects. It’s not a feel-good movie with a happy ending.
