the same formula and I just lose interest all together in the genre. (Mystery and historical fiction...for example.)

The two different timelines has to be handled extremely well...I often find myself only interested in one of them (By Any Other Name by Jodi Picoult comes to mind). The 1875 storyline in the book you read sounds much more intriguing...
