was going to get the rights to this holiday special, like how Apple TV is the only one allowed to air Charlie Brown specials.

That ticked me off that AppleTV took Charlie Brown from the general public. They let PBS show it, for one year only. i'm happy that NBC got Frosty and Ruldoph and not a streaming service.

I really need to get my favorites on DVD...

Yes, you should. I have collected a lot of Christmas Classic's cartoons. The commentaries on them are quite interesting.
