book In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash by Jean Shepherd, who grew up in a small town in Indiana. But parts of the movie were filmed in the Cleveland area, including the Christmas parade (Cleveland's Public Square), the department window with the Red Ryder BB gun/the visit with Santa (Higbee's downtown) and the outside shots of the house (in Tremont, a very cool Cleveland neighborhood).

A few years after the movie was released, I entered my freshman year of college and was lucky to get into an honors English class taught by Dr. Paskoff. "Louis" (pronounced "Loo-EE") was eccentric even for a college professor; while the other freshman English classes were studying stodgy "classics", we were reading In God We Trust... and going to see the movie "Peggy Sue Got Married" in the theater in downtown Kent.
