worked retail. Being a guy, never had to do a purse check, but I know the managers had to check the women employee's purses or any backpack or anything....never had the same schedule from week to week...and when I worked at the Gap, had to wear the current clothes despite working in the stock room. (Hollister let me wear whatever, but I was overnight in the stock room and folding clothes and rearranging displays...their dress code was even stricter for the daytime employees).
