I agree with what Chloe said that you’re worrying too much about what the customers might be like. The customers may be like me and chloe, LOL.
I hope so <g>. All my life, it's been ingrained in me to be kind to others, especially others working retail or in a restaurant, but I've read SO MANY horror stories lately about rude customers. I believe I've mentioned it here before but...for two days two summers ago, I helped bff shill cream whiskey at a Celtic Festival. That part alone was hysterical...you had a woman who identifies as 100% Italian and another who's not only mostly German/English but also doesn't drink alcohol pushing shots of whiskey, and in some cases cups of Irish coffee, on mostly Irish festival goers. Most of the people who stopped by were nice...or at least relatively neutral. But the one customer who sticks in my head is the sour old woman who was peeved about having to pay $4 for a shot of whiskey when the previous year it had been $1/shot (neither bff nor I knew why the price went up) and let both of us have it, as if we were somehow responsible for the cost increase. I'm generally an easygoing person who can put up with a lot, maybe a lot more than I should, but I'm not certain I can put up with multiple crabby customers.
Most importantly, you’d be job hunting as an employed person, not an unemployed person. You don’t have to tell other potential employers how many hours you’re working at Chico’s unless they ask.
True, though aren't you supposed to put dates on resumes concerning how long you've worked at a place?
My biggest concern is what you will do for health insurance if a part-time job causes Medicaid to cut you off. But there are very inexpensive ACA plans available on the exchange for people who make just a little too much money to qualify for Medicaid. That income group is probably the one that ACA plans help the most.
This is definitely something I need to look into. Before I was on Medicaid, I was paying $250/month for a healthcare plan. My niece and nephew who both work multiple jobs in either the restaurant business or music business (giving music lessons, playing the organ at a church Sunday morning) have told me they don't qualify for those inexpensive ACA plans you see advertised on TV ($14/month! $22/month! Just $10/month!) nor do any of their friends who are similarly employed.
Finally, I think being unemployed for over a year cannot be good for your head and your confidence, let alone your bank account. You are in your fifties and age discrimination is a real thing. That a store wants to hire you to wear and sell their clothes is a good thing. Plenty of stores cater to a younger customer demographic.
ALL this. Plus it would be nice to work with people my age again <g>.
It seems worth a try. If you really hate it, you can quit. But not before buying a few cute new clothes.
