the Ohio turnpike was finished in 1955. Drivers were apparently told that there would be a fee only as long as it took to pay for the project. Of course, once the cost of the construction was covered, the state (or somebody) decided to keep the fee to "cover the cost of maintenance". All these years later, Dad's still mad about that (and probably hasn't driven on the turnpike in at least 20 years, if not longer).
