The basic back story is that a couple of years ago, the mother of a 9 yo girl who thought of Cedar the goat as a pet entered him into an auction that would then sell the goat to the highest bidder, to be slaughtered for his meat. (yeah, real mother of the year there).

The girl then asked her mother to remove him from the auction. They tried to, and were denied. The goat was then taken somewhere to be slaughtered. The girl was heartbroken.

I just think this is egregious. People should be given an opt out window. So, the County (Shasta County) Sheriff comes out and takes the goat. Just takes him, and there is nothing the family can do to stop this. The goat was slaughtered not long after.

So, some of this is on Mother of the Year, but really, livestock are frequently thought of as pets, so there should be some kind of opt out period with perhaps some guardrails around it. Asm. Kalra (D-San Jose--it's CA so some of his district is probably farmland; some of my district is farmland too) has introduced a bill to create some guardrails for when the livestock is considered a family pet by a child in the household.

It's a big controversy in Northern California. I think you can read the latest SacBee article on this case. I believe you can access the article for free if you haven't gone to the site before.
