It's like...losing one of the people who first loved you and who loved you best (I know not everyone is that lucky with parental relationships, forgive me). This is like learning how to live with a new reality, but I will say it does get a bit easier with time. I really hope that happens for you, and until it does, I will just offer you a big bear hug.

Thomas is hard because he was too young.
