I was on when I was younger (I played four seasons of softball, from grades 4-7, and started a fifth before quitting due to a coach being, ah, a bit too intense) were made up of kids from my town and the small town immediately adjacent. Generally speaking, the kids on my teams came from families that were middle class and higher. But I was on a traveling All Star team when I was in 6th grade (where you're good mostly because you're older than many of the other players <g>); that team was made up of kids from many different communities and probably had a few kids from lower income families who needed help paying for their kids' expenses. The traveling All Star team dissolved before traveling anywhere of significance--definitely no road trips with overnight stays--so I don't know what cost is involved when teams travel. And I don't know if AM's son's team is a local team or team made up of players from all over, so I would be hesitant to guess if it's a team of players with similarly wealthy parents or if it's a team of players from families with different incomes.
