something to fill in some of the gaps. His passion is music and collaborating with other musicians, but that doesn't bring in a lot of $$.

So, as my boss just said, first things first. He needs to get better.

At least with state disability, he'll get some partial wage replacement, much of which will shake out to the same in the end because of the lower taxes you pay (less income) when on it.
