They know about the award, they care about winning it, they care about who else was nominated because they care who they beat. Most, if not all, would have read the nominations to see who they were competing with. Besides being competitive in nature, people who work in TV sports also know that winning an Emmy impacts their contract negotiations for higher salaries and more perks. I have a hard time believing they were blissfully unaware.
