I imagine it was at the very least water cooler gossip or those in charge told them. Remember, fake names were submitted or at least real people but in a way they could cheat the system and then the statues were re-engraved with their name.

Let’s not forget there is an official Emmy’s list of noms and winners. And a lot of winners are given the envelope at least that is what I heard.

Is it possible some truly didn’t know? Slim to none. I’d put it around 1% lol
