This description of the kind of books you like best leads me to think you would enjoy Anne Tyler.

* The closest I come to having a genre would be books about quirky small towns and the quirky people that inhabit them. Those usually make me smile, and any trouble those quirky small towns have are usually not all that serious and are easily dealt with once the quirky townspeople band together and tackle the not too serious problem.
