Every year, I do the same rituals on NYE/NYD that are supposed to bring you luck or good fortune or whatever. I eat 12 grapes at midnight. I eat pork (Dad's German side of the family) and black-eyed peas (Mom's Southern roots) on NYD, though I'm not a fan of sauerkraut or collard greens so I pass on those. A long time ago, I read wearing red underwear on NYE/NYD was lucky, though why I have no idea, so I do that. And every year, it's different. Some years are good years. Some years are bad years. Some years are somewhere in between. So now I do these things because they're tradition and they amuse me rather than thinking they'll bring me luck.
ETA--I found this article that explains NYE/NYD traditions and introduced me to a few fun new ones. And hey, the red underwear wasn't something someone just made up, so bonus (though I think this year, I'll wear white and yellow...)
