S4 was...not.
It wasn't the fact that the show got them together at the end of S3 as I have read so many times for 20 years.
The show immediately sent Maddie back to her parents in Chicago and had entire episodes without her (Cybil Shepherd's maternity leave I presume.) And then they decided to make Agnes and Bert a big thing...and there was even an episode without Bruce Willis/David either. They also had the writers strike (which they did mock in the finale). And the actress who played Agnes was pregnant too.
S4 still had its moments, but the show forgot what it was and turned into a sappy romantic drama. The last couple of episodes did an okay job trying to recapture the magic...
Still glad I'm finally getting to see it. I love how meta it is...
Also not going to read anything about the behind the scenes stuff until after I finish the series. That may take a while to read all of the stuff out there!
