self-reliant. "Never pay someone for something you can do yourself" (he learned this from his father), so Dad spent years fixing his own cars, doing minor home repair, mowing his acre of lawn, shoveling his driveway, etc. He didn't "retire" until he was in his mid 70s, not because he needed the money but because he needed to be in motion and needed (and still needs) to be needed. So the limitations age has put on him are an affront to him and makes it challenging for him to stay somewhat active and engaged in his twilight years.
