I mentioned this exchange to bff and a couple mutual friends and we all agreed: had we said this to our mothers back in the day, it...would not have ended well. One friend said he would've been dragged out of the store on the spot. I joked that my mom's response would've been "I birthed you and I can delete you" (a variation of "I brought you into this world and I can take you out of it", which Mom never really said...at least not out loud). But the best response was my bff who claimed that had she been in Michael's with her (sweet, loving, wonderful mom) and said that, her mama would've bought some knitting needles and yarn and knitted her a gag on the spot.
